Roma have issued a statement expressing their “full support” for Nikola Zalewski and Stephan El Shaarawy after the players were accused of betting on football.
Gossip columnist Fabrizio Corona previously claimed that current Roma players Zalewski and El Shaarawy were involved in gambling. Both players deny this and have instructed their lawyers to sue the Crown.
“In response to recent rumors regarding the alleged involvement of some of the club’s players in football betting, Roma expresses its full support to Nikola Zalewski and Stefan El Shaarawy, who have been the subject of reputationally damaging speculation,” – the statement says.
“The club has full confidence in Nicola and Stefan, who say they have nothing to do with this matter.”
Other players named by Corona, including Lazio defender Nicolo Casale and Juventus centre-back Federico Gatti, also deny any involvement in the betting scandal.
